Responsible Reproductive Health Education project (RRHEP)
Project description
Following concern regarding an alarming rate in teenage pregnancies, the UFS School of Nursing within the Faculty of Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Princess Gabo Foundation and the Directorate of Community Engagement, initiated the Reproductive Health Education Project (RRHEP). A service-learning module involving fourth-year Midwifery students, is linked to this project. The module involves engagement with the Albert Moroka High School in Thaba Nchu and Lekhulong Secondary School in Mangaung. The project is intended to empower learners to make responsible reproductive health choices. This programme encourages learners to make responsible decisions about sex and parenting. Schools and parents undergo training on the content of the project.
Project content
It involves activities such as:
- the doll parenting project;
- the practice of kangaroo mother care (with wraps made by the community);
- a research project; and
- parent training.
The Reproductive Health Education Project encourages learners to make responsible decisions about sex and parenting.
The doll parenting project was employed for Grade 8 learners in the Albert Moroka High School in Thaba ‘Nchu.
Our students from the School of Nursing are involved in projects pertaining to wound care and midwifery practices.
