LISTEN: Article recording of EMS Career Week 2024.

On 14 March 2024, the University of the Free State hosted a career fair for the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, followed by a career week for the same faculty on 26 and 27 March 2024. Strong business minds and entrepreneurial skills are needed to improve the high unemployment rate in South Africa.

On the first day of the career week, students were invited to attend a session on employability in the EMS space with speaker Maryke Marais, followed by a session on CV writing and interview skills presented by UFS Career Services.

Opportunities on the following day included a session hosted by Simphiwe Mngomezulu from the Office of the Premier, who talked about a career in the public sector. Furthermore, students could attend a session on Financial Literacy, or listen to Mpiti Mokgatla from Standard Bank who explained what a career in the banking industry entails.

The rest of the programme was packed with informative sessions on entrepreneurship, banking, management, finance, interview skills, and how to search for a job. On the second to last day, students could attend the EMS Career Fair in the Callie Human Centre where they interacted with potential employers.

"The world, and especially South Africa, is in dire need of minds who think sustainably about money matters, and people who are skilled at growing the economy."

Most students expressed the need for more such events on campus and appreciated the opportunity to make connections in the world of work. “This was the best event!” one noted, elaborating that it was an enlightening experience. Students also said they would like to see more companies at the Career Fair, which is a great platform for talent and employers to meet. Look out for more communication from UFS Career Services to join the next event.

We would like to thank the following participants:

Mbulelo James, Fumane Khutlane, Pulane Shabe, Likeleli Monyamane, and Venessa Mkhonto.
