Programme structure
The programme consists of TWO compulsory theoretical modules, TWO
Capita Selecta specialisation modules and ONE compulsory research report based on the specialisation
Capita Selecta modules.
Admission requirements
In addition to the requirements as presented in 1.4 under General Information of the Faculty of Humanities Rule Book, the following also applies:
- Admission to the Honours programme is subject to departmental approval, sustained high academic standards and selection criteria determined by the department.
- Admission is based on academic performance in undergraduate Drama core modules only (average mark of 60%). Application forms and information regarding specific admission requirements may be obtained from the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts. The closing date for applications for prospective students is 31 October of the preceding year.
- **Each field of specialisation has separate criteria that include auditions, interviews, show-reel, and/or portfolios.
- THEP6808 - To qualify for the Acting specialisation module, students must have passed THEP3700 in the undergraduate course with at least 65%. Students from elsewhere must provide audition material or do an audition that will be evaluated by a minimum of two staff members involved in the course.
- THET6808 - To qualify for the Technical theatre management specialisation module, students must have passed THET3700 in the undergraduate course with at least 65%. Students that did not graduate from the UFS Drama Department must provide a solid portfolio of technical work that will be evaluated by a minimum of two staff members involved in the course.
- THDS6808 - To qualify for the Design and Scenography specialisation module, students must have passed THET3700 in the undergraduate course with at least 65%. Students that did not graduate from the UFS Drama Department must provide a solid portfolio of designs and that will be evaluated by a minimum of 2 staff members involved in the course.
- THPT6808 - To qualify for the Physical theatre specialisation module, students must do an audition that will be evaluated by a minimum of two staff members involved in the course.
- THTM6808 - To qualify for the Theatre Making specialisation module, students must undergo an interview with the staff member conducting that specialisation and one other staff member. This interview will assist in determining the student’s suitability for the specialisation.
- THAT6808 - To qualify for the Applied Theatre specialisation module, students must undergo an interview with the staff member conducting that specialisation and one other staff member. This interview will assist in determining the student’s suitability for the specialisation.
- Academic acceptance does not imply acceptance for a particular field of specialisation. In addition to the above-mentioned criteria, the student’s choice of specialisations is further subject to approval by the AHD or Programme Director.
- Candidates may only register after the AHD or Programme Director has issued a letter of approval for their admission and selection of modules.
Curriculum
Students are required to complete 120 credits selected from the modules listed below.
- DRHR6804, DRMT6800, and DRMP6800 are compulsory modules.
- Additionally, students are expected to choose a further TWO specialisation modules to the value of 64 credits from the Capita Selecta list.
- The department may decide to limit the number of Capita Selecta for any given year.

*The department reserves the right not to offer a module if a sufficient number of enrolments cannot be secured, or when a qualified staff member in the field in question is not available to present the module at a given time.

Additional information/Assessment
The practical and theoretical work of students are evaluated continuously by means appropriate to the different modules. The
Capita Selecta specialisation modules consist of a number of practical components.
