Fundamentals of Theatre Directing (DRTD3704)
Being a director is a daunting task. In this unit, students will become acquainted with the fundamentals of directing. After this unit, students will be familiar with the directing process, from conceptualising, script analysis, auditions, and the rehearsal process to basic directing techniques.
Unit 1: The Director
This unit examines the concept of the Director, who is responsible for developing and implementing a unifying vision for a play. The unit asks: ”What is a Director; what is the purpose of a Director?” and explores this question by looking at the Director as an interpreter and artist.
Unit 2: Script analysis
This unit covers the process of choosing a play, reading the play, and analysing the script culminating in a concept for the play. This process goes hand-in-hand with creating a Director’s Workbook.
Unit 3: Directing fundamentals
This unit investigates the concept of ‘seeing’. The unit looks carefully at stage space, first by studying the importance of directing actors to communicate through groundplans. The unit continues to
Composition,
Picturisation,
Gestures,
Properties and
Movement as part of the ‘seeing’ process. The techniques discussed examine two ways of ‘seeing’: from the actor’s as well as the audience’s views.
