Theatre-Making (THEM3700)


This module is designed to prepare a student for entry into the professional theatre industry as a theatre maker. A student will create work from scratch, either as an individual or as a member of a team and will also be introduced to the practice of ensemble work, and how to conceptualise, research, plan and develop original theatre pieces. A student will also be expected to consider your work as a South African creating theatre in a contemporary context.

The Arts Management unit will guide a student through marketing and funding processes that they will need to successfully engage with the performing arts industry.

Unit 1: Arts Management

In this unit, the student will be expected to understand the basic principles regarding managing their own affairs as an artist in the South African Performing Arts Industry. The purpose of this module is to develop an understanding of managing yourself as a business. Furthermore, several topics will be covered toward business and project management’s primary principles to provide the student with the necessary tools to assist with future creative endeavours.

The unit is divided into the following aspects:
• The business of the performing arts
• Fundraising
• Brand building

After successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
• Plan, create and present a fundraising proposal
• Prepare and compile an arts management portfolio which includes a CV, a digital profile and a  showreel.

Unit 2: Theatre-Making

In this unit, you will learn, develop, and apply skills essential to the art of theatre-making, including conceptualisation, research, ensemble work, theatrical exploration, design, directing and performance. This unit includes the presentation to an audience of work created independently and under the guidance of your lecturers, where you will be expected to demonstrate the principles of theatre-making.
