Service Learning at Mooihawe Old Age Home

Mooihawe, which is an old age home where the students did their visits, was one of the new areas for service learning for 2012. As a second-year group they focused on the following within the area:

  • Instructing in activity and using the resources and materials as well as logistical and temporal environment in order to adapt the activities so that the recreational and free-time activities within the old age home can be levelled on a standard that is necessary for maximum and active participation from the residents.
  • The second-year students were also responsible for organising and hosting the Annual Games Day that included patients and clients from all of the six areas for community service learning to share in a day of fun, interaction, social integration and be stimulated through different conversations and music and being challenged in motor tasks, social games, cognitive stimulation, etc.

The presentation of the second-year group won overall on CSL day and also competed against 5 other groups for the title.
