A group of our third-year medical students has become so engrossed in their community project with the elderly that they now care even more deeply for the residents of the Omega Old Age Home.
As part of the curriculum for third-year medical students, the students were divided into groups and allocated certain community projects. Omega in Heidedal was given to Izaan's group. The students immediately began tackling the challenges that awaited them at the home.
"The old people stole our hearts," says Izaan van Wyk, one of the students in the group.
"Caring. This is the theme we decided on. We continually incorporate the 'caring theme' in everything we do there."
Thus far, the group has held special care days for the aged. Recently, they were treated to a session at which the wrinkled old hands were scrubbed and pampered.
The group is working out a stimulation programme with our occupational therapy students for its envisaged care corner, where the old people can read books and listen to music.
