In 2020 the Free State Provincial Heritage Resources Authority (FSPHRA) issued a permit for the relocation of the Steyn Statue, in the understanding that the University of the Free State (UFS) would reinterpret, reimagine and re-appropriate aspects of Presidentsplein (Red Square), in which the statue was located.

Within the context of the University Policy on Naming and Renaming (2020), much conceptual work has been done in this regard by a Special Task Team.

The Task Team recommends consultation with the community about the renaming of Presidentsplein to Kgotleng. Accordingly, the UFS Community is invited to participate in this renaming project as follows:

  • 1 June 2022, from 12:00 – 13:00: Occupants of the buildings surrounding Presidentsplein (Red Square) and UFS staff are invited to participate in a virtual dialogue in which further background to the project will be shared.
  • 2 June 2022, from 12:00 – 13:00: Students and Alumni are invited to participate in a virtual dialogue in which further background to the project will be shared.
  • From 6 to 20 June 2022: The UFS Community is invited to comment on the proposed renaming.

The project is overseen by an Institutional Multi-Stakeholder Committee.
