An honour, but also a stern test, says
Godfrey Tenoff on his appointment as the head coach of the South African student men’s soccer team.
According to Tenoff, the head of soccer at KovsieSport, this is the highest coaching position of his career. At the University of the Free State, he is in charge of the
women’s team and is also involved with the men.
“This appointment means a great deal to me because it indicates that USSA (University Sports South Africa) Football trusts me with their most important asset – their international athletes. It is an honour.”
“This is a welcome test to lead the best student players in the country, to inspire them and prepare them for success against international competition. I will rely on my experience as a player, during which time I competed locally and internationally and led players from different countries on the field,” he said.
Tenoff previously headed the coaching staff of the USSA U21 men’s team between 2015 and 2018 and was an assistant coach of the USSA senior men in 2018 and
2019.
“Being the assistant allowed me to see and experience everything first-hand. I also had the opportunity to contribute to planning and scheduling. I know the history of the team and I will hit the ground running with my plan.”
“Lots of hard work and planning has led to this. I am proud of the road I took to get here. It was not easy, but by God’s grace I was successful. This is significant to me and a step in the right direction in my ambitions, which I don’t want to disclose now.”
Should the games continue, the SA team will battle in the Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Associations (CUCSA) Games for Africa Zone VI countries in Lesotho in July.
