“I’m the first doctor in my family and my community. I could have allowed that to be enough for me, but I felt that if I could break that ceiling, how many more ceilings could I break … Clearly, I have a ceiling-breaking ability.”
UFS alumni have made a name for themselves as boundary breakers, and former Kovsie student, Dr Thato Mosehle, stands on the shoulders of many giants as she chases after everything that sets her soul on fire.
Mosehle, a
MB CHB graduate who is no stranger to the world of modelling, is celebrating her biggest victory to date, as she competes in the 2020 Miss South Africa beauty pageant as a top-15 finalist.
She graduated in 2018 and is currently completing her internship at Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp. While she regards medicine as her purpose and superpower, Mosehle says modelling and make-up artistry are two passions that are equally close to her heart.
A passion for modelling born at UFS residence
“I believe that when something attracts you differently to other things, the passion you develop will sustain you in it. Modelling and make-up are those things for me.” Mosehle’s modelling journey is about never giving up, no matter how many NOs you encounter. She unwittingly fell in love with modelling during her first year at Kovsies, when she participated in a compulsory beauty pageant for first-years living on campus. “I didn’t even make it to the top six, but because someone I looked up to affirmed me by telling me I had potential, I then decided to never look back,” she said.
She began entering beauty pageants on campus, such as Miss South College and Miss Armentum 2017. In 2016, she was selected as second princess in the Miss Glamorous Free State pageant. She went on to become the Miss Mamelodi Sundowns first princess in 2018.
Miss SA a dream come true
Mosehle said she had many doors closed to her, but that never deterred her. When she first entered Miss SA in 2019, she was rejected, but she wasn’t willing to give up so easily. She described making the top-15 as a dream come true.
“I would love to win. It would be an honour and privilege for me as it will enable me to advocate for education that is not just academic, but also in the sense of acquiring skills that will better individuals and society. For me, the journey isn’t only about the crown, it’s about the person I’m becoming through this experience.”
Mosehle concluded by saying, “Wherever your bar is set, that is where you will land. Keep pushing the bar higher, you will be so surprised at how far you can go.”
