The University of the Free State (UFS) and the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their partnership in various areas of mutual interest. The MoU outlines a framework for collaboration in academic programmes, research, and community engagement.

Under the agreement, the partnership will support the university's students and staff through academic and professional development programmes, including mentorship and coaching. The association aims to facilitate joint research projects and promote community engagement initiatives. “In 2019 we initiated this partnership with the aim of training ministers in both academia and spirituality, to serve diverse communities. Witnessing this historical moment, we firmly believe that the partnership will continue to grow," said Prof Rantoa Letšosa, outgoing Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Religion.

According to Rev Godfrey Betha, URCSA Moderator for the Free State, Lesotho, and Phororo regions, the partnership is also expected to offer practical and sustainable solutions to some of the socioeconomic challenges in the country. He emphasised the need for ministers to possess eight essential qualities, including vision, integrity, motivation, discipline, the right attitude, character, ability, and courage, to lead and serve their communities effectively. Rev Betha further stressed the importance of reflecting light on communities and providing leadership for them.

This partnership is aligned with the values of the university that underpin Vision 130, the strategic plan for the university’s impact leading up to 2034. The strategy aims to create a positive impact, demonstrate care, and transform the lives of the people served by the university. The partnership serves as an embodiment of these values, highlighting the UFS’s commitment to its strategic goals.

“As the university celebrates its 130th anniversary in 2034 and launches Vision 130, this partnership is a significant moment,” said Prof Francis Petersen, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the UFS. “The vision seeks to establish a knowledge-sharing environment that fosters new ideas and perspectives, enabling innovative solutions with a more substantial impact. By bringing together diverse experiences and perspectives, the university aims to promote a solid collaborative output, demonstrating its commitment to serving as an institution of higher learning. This partnership is a testament to the university’s goal of creating a dynamic learning environment that fosters innovation and contributes to the betterment of society.”
