The Office for International Affairs, University of the Free State (UFS) recently hosted its annual Study Abroad Scholarship Fair, commencing initially at the Bloemfontein campus and subsequently at the Qwaqwa campus. The event was inaugurated by the Acting Director of the Office for International Affairs, Prof Lynette Jacobs, who extended a warm welcome to all attendees and encouraged students to broaden their horizons.

The primary aim of the fair is to offer students at the UFS a platform to explore the diverse international opportunities available to them. Distinguished guests from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Joy Nogabe and Jabu Zondo, joined the event and delivered presentations on a wide array of study abroad opportunities.

The Qwaqwa leg of the event was officially opened by Dr Martin Mandew, Campus Principal at the Qwaqwa campus, who emphasised the importance of students taking the initiative to engage in international scholarship programmes. DHET conducted a comprehensive presentation on the international scholarships that they offer. Nogabe stated, “We strive to assist students and ensure that they are exposed to these different opportunities, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.”  The turnout of students was remarkable, and they actively engaged with the DHET presenters.

Furthermore, the DHET expressed their eagerness to collaborate with the Office for International Affairs in the coming year by expanding the fair. Their vision includes setting up physical stalls for various international partners and further enhancing the scholarship fair to ensure that all students can interact with these international opportunities.

Students were also eager to learn about the support structures available to those planning to study abroad. The DHET representatives reassured students that all necessary steps to prepare them for studying abroad would be taken once they have been awarded a scholarship.

Prof Lynette Jacobs expressed her satisfaction with the events. She said, “The Study Abroad Scholarship Fair was a significant initiative conducted by the Office for International Affairs alongside DHET, providing a platform for meaningful interactions between students and staff.” The event attracted an excellent turnout and served as a forum to understand the needs and aspirations of the students, reinforcing the university's commitment to fostering global perspectives and opportunities for its student body.
