The University of the Free State (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus is thrilled to celebrate the exceptional achievement of Lesego Malekana, a recent MSc graduate who has been accepted into the PhD programme at ETH Zurich, a leading science and technology university
in Switzerland. Malekana's acceptance is accompanied by a prestigious Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship, making this a truly remarkable accomplishment.
A testament to passion, perseverance, and the power of mentorship
Malekana's journey to ETH Zurich began with inspiration from Prof V Ralph Clark, Director of the Afromontane Research Unit and Associate Professor of Geography at UFS-Qwaqwa. "Prof Clark would always send us links to scholarship opportunities and encourage us to apply," Malekana explained. This proactive approach by UFS faculty members such as Prof Clark highlights the university's commitment to supporting students in achieving their academic goals.
Malekana's path was not without its challenges. One of the most demanding aspects of the application process involved creative thinking under pressure. "We had to come up with something creative on the spot," Malekana said. He rose to the challenge, writing most of the application himself. This demonstrates his adaptability and resourcefulness, qualities that will undoubtedly serve him well in his doctoral studies.
Prior to his acceptance at ETH Zurich, Malekana envisioned pursuing international collaboration, but anticipated remaining in South Africa. This scholarship presents an exciting opportunity to broaden his horizons and delve deeper into his field of study. While attending conferences has taken him to places such as Chile, Zurich represents a significant step further from home. However, Malekana embraces this opportunity for personal and academic growth.
"For us in science, collaboration is key to progress," Malekana noted. He envisions a future in academia, but also remains open to industry opportunities. His passion for plant ecology is clear, and he finds most fulfilment in the world of academic research.
Malekana's launch pad to academic greatness at ETH Zurich
The University of the Free State played a pivotal role in Malekana's academic journey. Following his honours degree, funding constraints posed a challenge. Fortunately, Prof Clark offered him an ARU bursary, enabling him to continue his studies. Malekana also fondly remembers his time conducting fieldwork in the Drakensberg, highlighting the university's commitment to providing students with practical learning experiences.
Looking back at his mentors, Malekana feels immense inspiration. "My supervisors have been such an inspiration throughout my academic career," he said. "Looking at the things they have done, I just want to be at that level." This desire to emulate his role models and contribute meaningfully to the field of science fuels his determination to pursue a PhD.
Lesego Malekana's story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the dedication of the UFS faculty. His acceptance into the prestigious PhD programme at ETH Zurich, coupled with the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship, is an inspiration to all UFS students. The university community extends its heartfelt congratulations to Malekana and wishes him all the best in his future endeavours.
