The University of the Free State (UFS) continues to prioritise inclusivity and accessibility for all students by implementing tailored support during the registration process. Recognising the diverse needs of students with disabilities, the Centre for Universal Access and Disability Support (CUADS) has set up specialised stations to ensure that these students experience a smooth and efficient registration journey.

Dedicated Support Stations

CUADS has established assistance stations at key locations across the Bloemfontein, South, and Qwaqwa campuses. At these stations, students with disabilities can access personalised support, including:

  • South African Sign Language interpretation
  • Accessible transport coordination
  • Personal assistance and mobility support

Two CUADS assistants – easily identifiable by their vests – will be available on the Bloemfontein Campus to offer immediate support. Coordinators stationed on the South and Qwaqwa campuses are also on hand to provide comprehensive assistance.

Prioritising Invisible Disabilities

Inclusion at the UFS extends beyond visible disabilities. Invisible disabilities – such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia – require careful attention and understanding. CUADS emphasises that while some students may not display outward signs of a disability, they may still need to be accommodated, such as avoiding queues or receiving direct assistance in crowded areas.

CUADS calls on all colleagues involved in the registration process to actively contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive environment. Assistants may approach registration staff directly on behalf of students to facilitate their process, reducing wait times and alleviating stress.

CUADS also encourages faculties and departments to designate a point person at each registration venue to liaise with CUADS assistants, ensuring smooth coordination and efficient support.

While the number of students requiring assistance is manageable, the commitment to providing exceptional support remains a priority. By working together, the UFS community can uphold its dedication to fostering an environment where all students – regardless of ability – can thrive.

CUADS welcomes suggestions to further improve the registration experience for students with disabilities. Together, let us make registration at the UFS a seamless and inclusive process for everyone.
