Jaco Peyper, 2024 Chancellor’s Distinguished Alum of the Year was honoured at the UFS Alumni Awards for his exceptional contributions to the sport.
This year, the University of the Free State (UFS) honoured two remarkable alumni for their exceptional contributions to rugby. Jaco Peyper, a respected figure in the world of rugby refereeing, was awarded the Chancellor’s Distinguished Alum of the Year title. Meanwhile, Retshegofaditswe ‘Tshego’ Nché, known to fans as ‘Ox,’ received the Young Alum of the Year award for his formidable prowess on the rugby field. Both men have made a significant impact on the sport, with their journeys reflecting resilience, determination, and the deep connections forged through rugby.
Jaco Peyper: 2024 Chancellor’s Distinguished Alum of the Year
The name Jaco Peyper has become synonymous with rugby, both locally and internationally, being the sixth most capped test referee in history. It is therefore apt that Peyper was recently named the winner of the UFS Chancellor’s Distinguished Alum of the Year award. Although his refereeing career has literally taken him right around the world, it is not the big matches or the spotlight that has been the most rewarding for him. It is the friendships he made.
“I got to know so much about different cultures by spending time with Italian, French, Argentinian, Japanese, English, Scottish – you name it – people!” says Peyper. As a result, he understands the world better. Rugby also had some hard lessons to teach. Criticism and pressure go together like rugby and braai when refereeing at top level. “If you want to improve,” Peyper says, “you have to take that criticism for breakfast and make it the breakfast of champions to work out what’s the best version of you.”
If pressure helps him develop the best version of himself, what makes him come alive? The answer: a challenge. “If someone says it can’t be done, or it’s going to be a hard job – that makes me come alive.” And away from the rugby field? “When I can spend time with my girls and my wife – that laughter makes me come alive.”
Ox Nché: 2024 Alum of the Year
Retshegofaditswe ‘Tshego’ Nché has been called a Cheetah, a Shark, and a Springbok, but he is probably best known as ‘Ox’. At 29 years of age, he is already regarded as one of the best props in world rugby. His achievement on the rugby field has also earned him the Young Alum of the Year award.
Recently described as a powerhouse in the Springbok squad’s front row, Nché started making a name for himself as a UFS Shimla player during the 2015 Varsity Cup competition. It was not easy going at first, though. He had to play off the bench for five games before being included in the starting line-up. During the final, he was instrumental in helping the Shimlas to a convincing victory.
A mere two years later, Niché made his test debut for the Springboks against Wales. Since then, he has become a regular member and star of the squad. His motto? Labor omnia vicit: Work conquers all. And salads don’t win scrums!
