The University of the Free State (UFS) is proud to announce that Prof Hussein Solomon, Senior Professor in the Centre for Gender and Africa Studies, has been ranked among the top 100 terrorism experts in the world by ScholarGPS. According to the ranking, Prof Solomon is ranked #93 globally among the top 100 terrorism experts.

This prestigious recognition is a testament to Prof Solomon’s extensive research and expertise in the field of terrorism and extremism. His work has a significant impact on the global understanding of these complex issues, and he is widely respected by his peers for his insightful analysis and thought-provoking commentary.

Prof Solomon’s research focuses on terrorism, extremism, and international relations, with a particular emphasis on the African context. He has published numerous articles, books, and book chapters on these topics, and has worked as a consultant for various organisations, including the United Nations and the South African government.

“It is wonderful that after 27 years of researching and writing about terrorism, one is recognised. However, for me, it is more important that a scholar in the Global South can achieve this recognition.  Even though it is not a level playing field between scholars in the Global North and Global South, it is wonderful that we can still produce excellence,” Prof Hussein replied when asked about how he felt about his recognition.

Prof Solomon’s ranking among the top 100 terrorism experts in the world is a significant achievement, not only for him personally, but for the UFS as a whole. This demonstrates the university’s commitment to producing high-quality research that makes a meaningful impact on the world.

To the young academic who also desires to receive the same accolade in their academic career, Prof Solomon’s advice to you is, “You have to be passionate about what you are researching. Do not be motivated by a promotion, or an NRF rating, or some other accolade. That is secondary. This passion will sustain you through lonely nights, over weekends and holidays as you toil in your study. The fruit of your research will only be experienced decades later. Whatever you do, do not get caught up in the latest academic fad. Focus on your own path.”

We congratulate Prof Solomon on this outstanding achievement and look forward to seeing the continued impact of his work in his field of study.
