As the countdown begins for the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship, excitement is building at the University of the Free State (UFS), where two standout rugby talents, Erich Visser and Stephanus “Fano” Linde, have been selected to represent the Junior Springboks in Italy from 29 June to 19 July. Their selection is a proud moment for the Kovsie rugby community, reflecting the university’s continued excellence in developing elite-level athletes.

Visser, a talented scrumhalf for the Toyota Cheetahs, described his selection as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. “I have always wanted to wear the green and gold,” he shared. “It took a lot of hard work, but every moment has been worth it.” Visser’s dynamic on-field performances, including appearances in the South Africa U21 Cup and national warm-up matches, have established him as a player with composure, quick decision-making, and a sharp attacking edge.

Linde’s journey is equally inspiring. This strong and disciplined eighthman also plays for the Toyota Cheetahs. His road to selection began in November 2024 with training camps, including a tour to the Republic of Georgia. He credits Coach Melusi Mthethwa, assistant coach for attack and the backline of the Under-20 Junior Springboks rugby team, for opening the door to his national call-up. “When I saw my name on the final team list, I was overwhelmed with joy,” he said. Currently deep into a rigorous three-week training camp with the Junior Springboks, Linde added, “We are working hard as a unit; the forwards are focusing on lineouts and scrums.”

South Africa hosted the tournament in 2023 and came third after beating England 22–15 at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. The team dropped in 2024, finishing in seventh place after beating Wales 47–31. The 37-player squad, coached by Kevin Foote, will look to better their previous outing as they aim for a stronger finish and a return to the podium.

South Africa finds itself in a competitive Pool A alongside England, Australia, and Scotland. With both Visser and Linde in peak form, the stage is set for a thrilling campaign.
