“A well-run, thoroughly planned, meticulously arranged event like this one is truly a thing of beauty.” These were the heartfelt words of Prof Hester C. Klopper during a luncheon in the Centenary Complex on the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) shortly after she was inaugurated as the 15th UFS Vice-Chancellor and Principal on 9 June 2025.

Guests included UFS colleagues, high-profile UFS stakeholders, government representatives, education leaders, members of traditional royal houses, former colleagues, and others. “In the end, every small detail, every inspiring word, every encouraging smile, every wonderful taste and sound, combine into a cherished memory – which will stay with me forever,” Prof Klopper said.

During the installation ceremony earlier in the Odeion Auditorium, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, was the first to extend her congratulations, applauding the fact that Prof Klopper was the first woman to lead the UFS in its 121-year history. “This historic milestone is not only a significant achievement for the UFS, but a powerful symbol of progress for the higher education sector in our country,” she said.

Dr Gondwe said the UFS plays a critical role in our national higher education landscape and that, despite difficulties in the higher education sector, the UFS has remained resolute in its mission, demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and strategic foresight. “The achievements of the UFS stand as an example of what can be accomplished with clarity of purpose and unity of vision. We commend this university for its transformation agenda and the strides made towards creating an inclusive, equitable, and socially just academic environment,” said Dr Gondwe.

Prof Vasu Reddy, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Internationalisation – on behalf of the UFS Executive Committee – called Prof Klopper’s appointment an affirmation of her commitment to transformative purpose. “We are confident that you are bringing a leadership style that is inspirational, decisive, and unique, to make the UFS a greater public institution as a public good.”

Representing the Senate as the highest academic governance body of the university, Prof Heidi Hudson, Professor in the Centre for Gender and Africa Studies at the UFS, said that Prof Klopper’s tenure promises opportunities and hope, inspiring confidence in the UFS community’s collective capacity to thrive. “In Senate, we have already felt the impact of your thoughtful engagement, your respect for the shared governance that lies at the heart of the academy, and your willingness to listen deeply and lead wisely.”

Dr Dhaya Naidoo, Senior Director: Directorate for Institutional Research and Academic Planning (DIRAP) – on behalf of the UFS Professional Support staff – pointed out that Prof Klopper assumes leadership at a time when higher education institutions are facing “a perfect storm of disruption.” He offered this assurance: “You will not walk alone. The professional staff of this university pledge to be your champions on this journey, not as followers, but as partners in purpose.”

Representing the UFS alumni, Bertie Haasbroek said that Prof Klopper is already writing history with her appointment and wished her well as the future is unfolding.

Mpho Maloka, President General of the Institutional Student Representative Council (ISRC), commended Prof Klopper on leading with ‘integrity and purpose’ over the past four months, and for taking a firm stance against corruption and gender-based violence. “We stand ready to walk this journey with you. To learn from your wisdom, and to contribute to your vision.”

The UFS Bloemfontein Campus Choir, the Odeion String Quartet, Emily Dangwa, and a saxophone ensemble provided musical performances during the installation ceremony, while Eclectic, Tears of Joy, and the Eunice Vitae Cantamus choir serenaded guests during the luncheon.

Welcoming the luncheon guests, the Chairperson of the UFS Council, David Noko, commended Prof Klopper for her inspiring address. “This transformative spirit is essential if we wish to not only navigate these complex times but also play a leading role in bringing positive change and renewal.”

As Prof Nico Koopman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Social Impact, Transformation and Personnel at Stellenbosch University – a former colleague of Prof Klopper – proposed a toast, he referred to the rich legacy that Prof Klopper left after her eight and a half years as the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor overseeing Strategy, Global and Corporate Affairs. He reminded her: “You are entrusted with a responsibility, not so that you must prove yourself, but because you have already proven yourself.”

During her acknowledgement, Prof Klopper quoted civil rights activist Maya Angelou, who said: “A great leader sees greatness in other people. You can’t be much of a leader if all you see is yourself.”

She concluded: “And today, I look around me, and I am eternally grateful to see so many great people who are committed to helping me take the University of the Free State into the future.”
