Dr Glen Taylor, Senior Director: Directorate for Research Development at the UFS, was honoured with SARIMA’s award for distinguished contribution to the research management profession.
Reflecting on this milestone, Dr Taylor said: "I am deeply humbled by this recognition from SARIMA. Personally, it affirms that years of commitment to advancing research management have made a meaningful difference. Professionally, it reflects the growing maturity of research management in South Africa. This award is not just about me – it is a tribute to the incredible dedication of my colleagues in the DRD."
SARIMA’s recognition acknowledges Dr Taylor’s strategic foresight, innovation, and leadership in embedding world-class systems at the UFS, including attaining Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) platinum status – a continental first for any university in Africa. These achievements have positioned the UFS as a trusted partner for international collaborations and as a leader in research management nationally and regionally.
Looking back, Dr Taylor highlighted milestones such as strengthening governance frameworks, developing incentive structures that drive performance, and supporting large-scale initiatives that boost the UFS’ research capacity. Importantly, he has also supported mentorship and capacity-building programmes such as Grow-Your-Own-Timber and the Future Professoriate, ensuring that the next generation of scholars is empowered to thrive. Furthermore, he was instrumental in establishing the Afromontane Research Unit on the Qwaqwa Campus and a number of spin-out companies from the UFS.
"Research management is no longer administrative support; it is a strategic driver," Dr Taylor noted. "By enabling interdisciplinary work, building strong external partnerships, and ensuring responsible conduct, we ensure research translates into impact – from health and food security to climate and innovation."
As the UFS moves towards
Vision 130, Dr Taylor’s priorities include strengthening internationalisation through research collaborations, expanding industry and innovation partnerships, and consolidating research infrastructure. The recognition by SARIMA not only honours Dr Taylor’s individual journey but also affirms the DRD’s role in positioning the UFS as a research-led institution with global impact.
