The University of the Free State (UFS)
Qwaqwa Campus recently hosted a special Meet and Greet between Vice-Chancellor and Principal (VCP),
Prof Hester C. Klopper, and student governance leaders. The event, a crucial part of the induction and orientation programme for newly elected student representatives, provided a platform for Prof Klopper to share her vision for responsible, values-driven leadership.
Pholla Mbalane, acting Deputy Director: Institutional Student Governance Office, explained that even though this session was primarily for student leaders, “we strongly believe that it would be valuable for the Qwaqwa Campus Management Committee (QCMC) and Residence Life to be present. Their presence will strengthen the spirit of collaboration and provide support to our student leaders as they embark on their new term of office”.
Prof Klopper’s address focused on the profound responsibility that comes with student leadership. She emphasised that their role goes beyond a mere position of trust; it is a privilege to serve with integrity and a chance to shape the future of their peers and the university community. "Your presence here this afternoon really represents the beginning of a meaningful, valuable journey," she said, highlighting how their actions and decisions have a ripple effect across the campus.
The VCP’s speech was a powerful call to action, urging students to not only lead for the present moment, but to consider what kind of leadership is needed to build the society and country they desire. She stressed that effective leadership means valuing the processes, rules, and regulations in place, and becoming an example of ethical conduct.
A foundation built on core values
Prof Klopper reiterated the university’s unwavering commitment to its core values: excellence, innovation and impact, accountability, care, social justice, and sustainability. She explained how these principles should guide the student leaders’ practice, just as they guide the university's executive team.
Accountability was defined as an ‘unwavering commitment to transparency’. She urged students to make decisions they can justify, ensuring that their actions are always in the best interest of their peers.
Excellence serves as a reminder to set high standards and inspire others.
Innovation and impact encourage creative thinking to solve challenges, especially in a resource-limited environment.
Care is about recognising the human element behind every decision.
Social justice calls for providing equal opportunities to all, regardless of background.
The VCP was also uncompromising about the university's non-negotiable policies, highlighting a zero-tolerance stance towards both corruption and gender-based violence (GBV). She challenged student leaders to be ‘above reproach in all financial matters’ and to be unwavering champions of safety, dignity, and respect for every member of the university community. "Your leadership must create safe spaces for all students," she said, reinforcing the university's commitment to fostering an environment where everyone can learn and grow without fear.
The pillars of responsible leadership
Prof Klopper outlined several key qualities of responsible leadership, which she described as the university’s ‘North Star’:
Integrity: Acting honestly and consistently, even when no one is watching.
Accountability: Taking ownership of decisions and their consequences.
Empathy: Understanding and respecting different perspectives.
Courage: Standing up for what is right, even if it is unpopular.
Collaboration: Building trust and fostering a shared sense of purpose.
Humility: Remaining grounded, open to feedback, and willing to learn.
Service: Placing the well-being and growth of others at the centre of the leadership journey.
A legacy to uphold
In her closing remarks, Prof Klopper recognised the Qwaqwa Campus' proud history of transformation, and she encouraged the new leaders to continue this legacy. She acknowledged that the future is in their hands and that they must choose to make a difference in an increasingly complex world.
"The question is not whether we can make a difference; it is whether you choose to make a difference," she concluded. "Lead with purpose, walk with integrity, and know that you carry with you the hope and unwavering support of the University of the Free State."
Following the VCP's address, the Director of the
Division of Student Affairs, Zoleka Dotwana, delivered a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Prof Klopper and the executive committee for their continued support and for making time to engage with the campus’ student leaders. The event served as an inspiring start to the new leadership term, setting a high standard for service and integrity for the year ahead.
