Dr Samantha Potgieter, infectious disease expert at the Universitas Academic Hospital and affiliated Lecturer in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of the Free State (UFS), will answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccine and its affects.

The webinar will address questions such as the following:

• what vaccination is and how it works
• how vaccines are developed and how we know they are safe and effective
• how the COVID-19 vaccine works and how it can protect you
• the side effects of the vaccine
• the risks vs benefits of the vaccine.

The Department of Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of the Free State (UFS) recently hosted its second annual workshop on “Applications of Statistics and Probability in Energy, Finance and Actuarial Science”.

Talented international experts presented papers on recent developments in extreme value theory, actuarial science and risk analysis. Staff and postgraduate students of the department also presented papers on the topic.
