The Faculty of the Humanities will be hosting a round-table dialogue on ‘Humanistic Perspectives on Student Protests in South Africa’, an important discussion on a matter that is currently in the spotlight at the UFS and other institutions nationally. Both students and staff are invited to attend in-person or virtually.


The dialogue aims to discuss ‘humanistic perspectives’ on student protests and includes, among others, the following topics:

• Dynamics of student protests
• The relationship between politics and protests
• Why protests are a challenge for the higher education secto
• Possible responses to protests by universities.

Four of UFS are top achievers at 2010 General Knowledge Olympiad

The General Knowledge Olympiad winners are, from left: Alex de Gouveia, Martiné van der Merwe, Prof. Jonathan Jansen, our Vice-Chancellor and Rector, Prof. Nico du Plessis former staff member, Emme-Lancia Faro and Foster Lubbe. Emma was the Free State winner in both 2007 and 2008.

Our university awarded four bursaries, to the value of R5000 each, to its students who were top achievers of the 2010 General Knowledge Olympiad this year.

Last year 18 150 secondary learners participated in the Olympiad, which was brought about in 1992.
