On 20 October 2022, the University of the Free State (UFS) Faculty of Theology and Religion will present the distinguished Tutu-Jonker lecture in honour of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Prof Willie Jonker. These two theologians are well-known in South Africa for their emphasis on reconciliation, and the series of lectures is a tribute to their reconciliatory efforts.
This will be the first in-person Tutu-Jonker lecture since COVID-19 and the passing of Archbishop Tutu. The keynote speaker, Dr Lazarus Mokobake, Chaplain in the South African Defence Force, will deliver the lecture, themed: ‘Faltering resilience – a nation in need of conciliation’.

Two UFS academics receive prestigious Sichel Medal

At the recent annual conference of the South African Statistical Association, Prof. Abrie van der Merwe and Dr Delson Chikobvu from the Department of Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of the Free Sate, were awarded the prestigious Sichel Medal for the best paper published by a member of the South African Statistical Association in the year 2010.
“The Herbert Sichel Medal is awarded annually to the member (or members) of the Association who have published the best statistical paper during the previous year in a refereed journal, in fully refereed conference proceedings, or as a refereed chapter in a book.”
