This year, the University of the Free State will witness one of its biggest graduation seasons yet. A total of 19 ceremonies will take place this April. The Qwaqwa Campus will host four ceremonies from 14 to 15 April and the Bloemfontein Campus will host fifteen celebrations from 18 to 22 April 2023. 

A grand total of 8 628 graduates will walk across the stage throughout the seven days. In addition, four honorary doctorates will also be conferred. Prof Stephen Brown will be awarded the Council Medal, Prof Mattheus Lötter is to receive the Chancellor's Medal.

UFS a finalists for the Sanlam Afrikaans Drama prize

UFS one of the finalists for the Sanlam Afrikaans Drama prize

 

The University of the Free State, the 2005 winner of the Sanlam prize for Afrikaans drama, is once again a finalist in this year’s competition with the drama, Breinbliksem by Thys Heydenrych. 

 

The other finalists are the University of Stellenbosch (Willem Anker’s Slaghuis) and the Tshwane University of Technology (Wim Vorster’s Waterman and Anelle Bester’s Dis ek, Anna).

 

The four winning texts are performed at Aardklop in Potchefstroom from 26 to 30 September. The winning department receives R100 000 and the winning drama will be performed on two other arts festivals in South Africa. The individual prizes are R20 000 each.
