Two researchers. One prestigious programme. One historic milestone for the University of the Free State (UFS). For the first time, two UFS researchers have been selected for the Fulbright South African Researcher Programme in the same award cycle, underscoring the university's growing global research profile.

While the UFS previously celebrated a double international achievement when two staff members were selected for the United States International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP), this is the first time the university has achieved a double Fulbright success. Given the highly competitive nature of the Fulbright Programme – where institutions may sometimes have only one successful candidate (or none at all) – the simultaneous selection of Associate Professor WP Wahl and researcher Zoleka Dikana represents an exceptional accomplishment for both the university and the Faculty of Education.

Administered by the US Department of State, the Fulbright Programme is one of the world's most prestigious academic exchange initiatives, fostering research excellence, international collaboration, and mutual understanding through education. The selection of two UFS researchers in a single award cycle reflects not only individual academic excellence but also contributes to the university's growing reputation as a globally engaged institution producing research with international relevance.

Although their research focuses on different fields, both scholars share a common goal: using knowledge to address pressing societal challenges while strengthening research collaboration between South Africa and the United States.

Strengthening cognitive education through global collaboration

Prof WP Wahl from the Department of Curriculum Studies and Higher Education in the Faculty of Education will undertake his Fulbright South African researcher project at the University of Massachusetts Boston's College of Education and Human Development from 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027.

His research focuses on creating higher education environments that enable students to learn, develop, and succeed, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds. More recently, his work has centred on cognitive development and critical thinking, areas increasingly recognised as essential for preparing graduates to navigate complex social and economic challenges. "My research centres on creating higher education environments that are conducive to students' learning, development, and success, especially students hailing from marginalised backgrounds," says Prof Wahl. "Lately, I have placed a strong emphasis on the cognitive development of students."

His Fulbright residency forms part of a broader three-year South African research project and will provide an opportunity to establish long-term research collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Boston. During his stay, Prof Wahl will present guest lectures in the university's internationally recognised Critical and Creative Thinking Programme, while exploring opportunities for collaborative research, academic exchange, and curriculum development.

Beyond advancing his own research, Prof Wahl's project aims to strengthen academic partnerships between the two institutions and contribute to the development of graduates equipped with the cognitive and critical thinking skills required in an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy.

Harnessing artificial intelligence to empower small businesses

Researcher Zoleka Dikana from the Office of the Dean in the Faculty of Education will spend nine months at George Mason University as part of the Fulbright Visiting Researcher Student Programme from 24 August 2026 to 24 May 2027.

Her research explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can strengthen the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly those operating in rural and developing economies. By comparing AI adoption in South Africa and the United States, she aims to develop sustainable innovation frameworks that enable SMEs to integrate digital technologies and improve their long-term competitiveness.

"The Fulbright experience will allow me to build on the strong academic foundation I have already received at my home institution by exposing me to new perspectives, research approaches, and international collaborations," says Dikana.

"Working alongside scholars in my field will broaden my thinking and enrich my research on AI and SME growth. I believe the experience will strengthen my research capacity, enhance my professional development, and enable me to contribute more effectively to research initiatives and innovation at my institution."

In addition to advancing her research, Dikana is eager to experience how American universities collaborate with industry and entrepreneurs to solve real-world challenges.
