The University of the Free State (UFS) will welcome two of South Africa's most celebrated storytellers back to campus when acclaimed author Deon Meyer and renowned musician Coenie de Villiers present Karoo Choice: The best of the Karoo Suites at the Odeion on 28 July.

The performance reunites two UFS alumni whose collaboration has captivated audiences across the country for more than a decade. Combining Deon Meyer's evocative storytelling with Coenie de Villiers' distinctive piano compositions, the production offers audiences an intimate journey through the landscapes, characters, and memories of the Karoo.

A homecoming through stories and music

Karoo Choice revisits some of the most memorable moments from the original Karoo Suite productions, while also introducing a few surprises. In this stripped-down performance, Meyer returns as narrator, while De Villiers accompanies the stories on piano, creating a personal and immersive theatre experience.

For De Villiers, performing at the university carries special meaning.

"Deon Meyer and I are excited about the production on the UFS Bloemfontein Campus. It has extra significance, as we are both alumni of the university," he says.

"I also taught at the university for many years. Being able to stage the production in conjunction with the UFS is an honour."

Their return highlights the enduring relationship between the university and its alumni, demonstrating how lifelong connections continue to enrich the cultural life of both the institution and the wider community.

The concert also reflects the Odeion's long-standing role as one of South Africa's leading performance venues, providing audiences with opportunities to experience world-class music, literature, and the performing arts on campus.
