The international response to the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a health security threat stimulated an international response that commenced with drastic, but localised actions in China, but responses rapidly manifested in more extreme measures in the rest of the world. Amidst international efforts imposing extraordinary national and international movement restrictions and a rush to find a medical cure, two questions arise. First, how does COVID-19 as a health security threat feature within the global security debate and second, how to explain the harsh responses that one observes.

UFS School of Management honours achievers

 The School of Management at the University of the Free State (UFS) recently made two awards during the annual MBA Gala Function that took place on the Main Campus in Bloemfontein. Ms Jackie Ntshingila received the award for MBA Alumni Achiever of the Year and Mr Johan Eksteen received the award for MBA Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year. Earlier this year, Mr Eksteen was named as the prize-winner in the manufacturing category of the Enablis FNB Launchpad Business Plan Competition. The floating cup for Achiever of the Year was sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Interstate Bus Lines sponsored the trophy for the Entrepreneur of the Year. At the function were, from the left, front: Prof. Helena van Zyl, Director of the UFS School of Management and Ms Ntshingila; back: Mr Pieter du Toit, Chairperson of the MBA Alumni, Prof. Tienie Crous, Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and Mr Eksteen.
