A dancing cat, a howling dog, and a vampire bunny. The perfect pet combination for any family. It is a dark and stormy night and Chester (the family cat) and Harold (the family dog) sit waiting for their owners to return home from the movies. Chester and Harold are more than just pets, they are good friends too. When the Monroes finally get home, they come bearing a surprise: they have found a bunny in the movie theatre. However, this is no ordinary rabbit … this is the extraordinary Bunnicula. When the family’s produce starts losing its juice, Chester thinks he knows what is causing the fantastic phenomenon. Bunnicula is a vampire! Or maybe Chester’s imagination is getting the better of him. Singing and dancing their way through this hilarious mystery, the furry friends find room in their hearts, and in their home, for one very unique bunny.

This unique musical Children’s theatre production is directed by DeBeer Cloete and features second-year Drama students in the South African premiere of Deborah and James Howe’s Bunnicula. The production runs from the 11th to the 14th op April at the Scaena Rehearsal Room on the UFS Campus and tickets are available through Computicket. The production is recommended for children 7 years and up and everyone young at heart.

A Touch of Opera

A student production with excerpts from operas by MOZART and VERDI - (Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Il Trovatore, Nabucco)

4 October 2019

Odeion

The OSM constantly strives to nurture aspiring artists for the demands of their trade as professional singers. Although we have a balanced vocal curriculum representing all classical genres, students show great interest in opera. In 2017, the OSM in collaboration with the Free State Symphony Orchestra launched an initiative to host an annual opera and/or oratorio production. In these productions, our vocal students have the opportunity of sharing the stage with professional singers and musicians and also work with experienced directors and conductors. A Touch of Opera, however, is exclusively a student production in which all our vocal students, from the Higher Certificate in Music Performance to second-year Diploma, will showcase their talent and what they have learned thus far on their educational paths.

Arias, duets and choruses from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte, as well as Verdi’s II Trovatore and Nabucco, with piano accompaniment, will be staged in the Odeion. A production team consisting of OSM lecturers will guide students in stage and musical directing and movement. Professional lighting will also assist in transcending this program of the most popular opera music into an entertaining event.
