A dancing cat, a howling dog, and a vampire bunny. The perfect pet combination for any family. It is a dark and stormy night and Chester (the family cat) and Harold (the family dog) sit waiting for their owners to return home from the movies. Chester and Harold are more than just pets, they are good friends too. When the Monroes finally get home, they come bearing a surprise: they have found a bunny in the movie theatre. However, this is no ordinary rabbit … this is the extraordinary Bunnicula. When the family’s produce starts losing its juice, Chester thinks he knows what is causing the fantastic phenomenon. Bunnicula is a vampire! Or maybe Chester’s imagination is getting the better of him. Singing and dancing their way through this hilarious mystery, the furry friends find room in their hearts, and in their home, for one very unique bunny.

This unique musical Children’s theatre production is directed by DeBeer Cloete and features second-year Drama students in the South African premiere of Deborah and James Howe’s Bunnicula. The production runs from the 11th to the 14th op April at the Scaena Rehearsal Room on the UFS Campus and tickets are available through Computicket. The production is recommended for children 7 years and up and everyone young at heart.

Nag van die hiëna is a brand new thriller by Nico Luwes that promises fun for audiences who can try to solve the intricate twists in the play. The thriller, as genre, is seldom written and performed on Afrikaans theatre stages. in South Africa. Twin brothers, Leon and Hendrik, are full of fraudulent money schemes and lie and corrupt far as they can. It seems as if Leon, a prime evil man, has a hold on almost everybody in town. Leon’s wife, Lalien, has the seven year itch and it seems as if something is brewing between her and the doctor. Dr. Gert ha some skeleton’s in his cupboard and experiments with concoctions for animal dips to financially save his practice. Ricky, his pal from varsity days, sells pills for a pharmaceutical company and makes a stunning lot of money? Joyce, the doctor’s receptionist is a lonely lady with a cat. Leon’s attorney, Swannie, a good hearted little man is caught up the mess. The poor police inspector, Bantjies, sits with a dilemma of unsolved cases and a husband who thinks he knows more about police matters than herself. Just as she thinks she can close a case, some fish moth jumps out again? Corruption, affairs, jealousy, revenge, money schemes and murder forms part of the mix! Will they be caught?

Luwes directs the play with drama students in the Scaena Theatre on the UFS campus from 19 to 21 September, His latest directing projects include Maskermaan and Die Renosters, both prize winners as best production and best debut production at the Vryfees in 2010 and 2011. His comedy, Graswewenaar, was sold out at Vryfees 2012 and an extra show had to be put on the programme. Now it is time for a real thriller in Afrikaans.
