A long time ago, in Arcadia, a land covered with golden sand, lived a Sultan and his beautiful daughter, Princess Shumaila. On the Princess’s eighteen birthday, her father arranged for her to meet three possible suitors. The Princess was unsure of these plans but with the help of her camel friend, Jamaila and the all-knowing Genie Alim, they will help her to devise a plan to make her decision easier.

Everything doesn’t go according to plan, though, because of the jealous sorceress Mara who will do everything in her power to become queen of Arcadia. Come and join the princess and her friends to see what plan they will devise to help Princess Shumaila and save the kingdom from the evil sorceress.

An Evening of Popular Songs

with Elmarie Wiesner (soprano) & Nicol Viljoen (piano)
19 April 2012
Odeion
19:30

Elmarie Wiesner was born and raised in Bloemfontein. She completed her music studies in 1995 at the then UFS Department of Music and plays various instruments. She is well-known for her diverse voice skills, from choir to jazz and ensemble (e.g. Brilliant Cut). She found her place especially as songwriter in the gospel market with two CDs: Maan om die Aarde (2003) and Want ek Wil (2007). Both were produced and released by Louis Britz of Merchant Records. This fitted into her ministry dream: she completed her theology studies in 2000. She was inducted as minister of the Dutch Reformed Church Hugenoot in 2001. She has been minister of the Dutch Reformed Church Bloubergstrand since 2005, where contemporary church music forms part of her daily activities.

Nicol Viljoen, Head of the Odeion School of Music, will join Elmarie on stage in An Evening of Popular Songs. For the past 15 years, her musical friendship with Nicol Viljoen has been for her a source of happiness and has landed them together on several stages like the KKNK, the Volksblad Arts Festival, the Five Flies and Green Dolphin (Cape Town) as well as various theatre restaurants and sitting rooms with pianos. Well-known twentieth-century melodies are coloured by improvisation to create an accessible jazz experience.
