The Princess was unsure of these plans but with the help of her camel friend, Jamaila and the all-knowing Genie Alim, they will help her to devise a plan to make her decision easier.

Everything doesn’t go according to plan, though, because of the jealous sorceress Mara who will do everything in her power to become queen of Arcadia. Wiley lives in a swamp with his conjure woman mother, his hound dog, and the Hairy Man who haunts Wiley’s dreams. Wiley, as a test of courage, must face the Hairy Man on his own. Without the use of magic, he is left to rely solely on his wits... as the dark swamp around him comes alive. The tale has been passed down from generation to generation and has taken many forms from a legend set down by Donnel van de Voot in a manuscript of the Federal Writer’s Project of Alabama to the recent book by Molly Garret Bang. This scripted version has a slightly different version with a new ending. It is an award- winning play which teaches all of us that courage and imagination are often the best weapons in overcoming childhood fears.

This production is suitable for ages 9 years and older. Younger kids might get frightened.

“Wiley and the Hairy Man” performs in the Scaena Theatre. Tickets available at Computicket.
