A long time ago, in Arcadia, a land covered with golden sand, lived a Sultan and his beautiful daughter, Princess Shumaila. On the Princess’s eighteen birthday, her father arranged for her to meet three possible suitors. The Princess was unsure of these plans but with the help of her camel friend, Jamaila and the all-knowing Genie Alim, they will help her to devise a plan to make her decision easier.

Everything doesn’t go according to plan, though, because of the jealous sorceress Mara who will do everything in her power to become queen of Arcadia. Come and join the princess and her friends to see what plan they will devise to help Princess Shumaila and save the kingdom from the evil sorceress.

On October 6, 1998, in the quiet town of Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard, a 21 year-old gay student, was tied to a cattle fence, brutally beaten, and left to die in freezing temperatures. Matthew’s death six days later received international attention that sparked vigorous debate regarding hate crimes and homophobia. One month following Matthew’s death, the Tectonic Theatre Project, led by playwright Moises Kauffman, travelled to Laramie and conducted more than 400 interviews with 100 Laramie residents concerning their reaction to the horrendous crime. Structured as a docudrama, the play asks the question “Could this happen in your town?” Performances: Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and 2nd. In the Scaena Theatre at UFS, 19:30pm. Free admission. A talk-back discussion will follow the performance on the 31st, entitled “Acceptance and Tolerance: The Climate Towards Hate Crimes in South Africa”
