Press Release

In this Afrikaans version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer night’s dream, ‘n Midsomernagdroom, the Drama Department of the Free State University attempts to make this Shakespeare fantasy accessible for children.

Karen Combrinck, also known for her adaptations of Alice in Wonderland and Die Towenaar van Ondersteboland, has adjusted ‘n Midsomernagdroom in an exciting way to include understandable Afrikaans that would sweep young and old away to a magical land of imagination.

There is an enchanted wood inhabited by the Fairy King and Queen who constantly squabble, dancing fairies and a mischievous elf which deliberately upsets matters in the wood. Add a woodcutter who changes into a donkey and a magical flower that charms sweethearts into lovesick lovers, and you’re left with a delightful children’s play.

’n Midsomernagdroom promises a spellbinding adventure with whimsical characters, lots of action, colourful costumes and heaps of excitement. Don’t let the opportunity pass to introduce this classical work to the young ones (of body and mind).

The directors are Gerben and Marijda Kamper and the play will be performed by drama students of the Free State University from 21 to 24 May 2014. Tickets are available at Computicket.
