The Bald Diva

A typical English family: a typical English husband; a typical English wife, and a typical English home – except for the grandfather clock that strikes any number of times whenever it feels like it! How odd! And why are all the family friends named Bobby Watson?

Not much makes sense in Eugene Ionesco’s acclaimed play, The Bald Diva, but that’s half the fun. A French maid, a fireman and two very confused dinner guests all turn a “typical” English evening into an experience that no-one is likely to forget soon.

The Bald Diva is an hour-long romp through the absurdity of language, English tradition and strained marital relationships. Directed by Dion van Niekerk, and starring a bunch of highly talented students, this classic masterpiece is not to be missed!

The Bald Diva will be playing at the University of the Free State’s Scaena theatre from the 24th to the 26th May at 19:30pm. Tickets are available at Computicket.

Spencer Myer – piano recital

Spencer Myer, exceptional American pianist and gold medalist of the 2008 New Orleans International Piano Competition needs no introduction and the OSM grabbed the chance to have him here again in 2012. This will be the last time in a very long time that Spencer will be touring South Africa.

Spencer Myer’s orchestral, recital and chamber music performances have been heard throughout North America, Canada , Europe, Africa and Asia. He has been soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra, Louisiana and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestras, the Baton Rouge, Bozeman, Indianapolis, Knoxville, New Haven, Phoenix, Richmond (IN), Santa Fe, Southeast Iowa, Tucson and Wyoming Symphony Orchestras, and Beijing’s China National Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with, among others, conductors Nicholas Cleobury, Neal Gittleman, Jacques Lacombe, Jahja Ling, Maurice Peress, Matthew Savery, Klauspeter Seibel, Arjan Tien and Victor Yampolsky. In May 2005 his recital/orchestral tour of South Africa included a performance of the five piano concerti of Beethoven with the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa. Many of his performances have been broadcast on WQXR (New York City), WHYY (Philadelphia), WCLV (Cleveland) and WFMT (Chicago).

In 2004 Spencer Myer captured First Prize in the 10th UNISA International Piano Competition. He is also a laureate in the 2007 William Kapell, 2005 Cleveland, 2005 Busoni (where he was also awarded the Audience Prize) and 2004 Montréal International Piano Competitions. Spencer is winner of the 2006 Christel DeHaan Classical Fellowship from the American Pianists Association. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School, where he studied with Julian Martin. Other teachers include Peter Takács, Joseph Schwartz and Christina Dahl. He also studied with Jerome Lowenthal and, later, Vocal Accompanying with Warren Jones and Marilyn Horne. During the course of his undergraduate studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, he was the recipient of numerous awards from that institution. His Doctor of Musical Arts degree was conferred by Stony Brook University in 2005. Spencer Myer can be heard on the Dimension Records label. His debut CD for Harmonia Mundi USA was released in the fall of 2007.
