“There once was a Velveteen Rabbit, and in the beginning, he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a Rabbit should be; and for at least an hour the Boy loved him”.

Hoe speelgoed regtig-egtig word is a brand-new theatre script from the pen of Karen Combrinck based on Margery Williams’ beloved tale of the Velveteen Rabbit.  The production tells the tale of a shy toy rabbit who wants nothing more than becoming real.  One day the toy rabbit ends up on a heap of Christmas gifts.  Along with the other toys, old and new, the velveteen rabbit goes on a journey of discovery during which he realizes that it is not what you can do or what you look like that matters, but that being loved by someone else makes you real.

DeBeer Cloete (Bunnicula, Lyle the Crocodile and A monster under the bed) directs this production that showcases the talents of the second-year drama and theatre arts students.

The production opens on Wednesday 19 September at the Rehearsal Room at the Scaena Theatre Complex on the UFS campus.

Tickets are available through Computicket and are priced between R20 and R25.

Showtimes are as follow:  19 - 21 September 11:00, 21 September 18:00 and 22 September 10:00 and 12:00.

Ben Schoeman is one of South Africa’s foremost pianists. In 2008 he won the first grand prize in the UNISA Vodacom International Piano Competition in Pretoria – the first South African ever to win this prize. He is also the gold medal and first prize winner of the 2009 Royal Overseas League Music Competition in London. Over the past few years he has won all the South African national music competitions for which he was eligible, including the UNISA National Piano Competition as well as the UNISA and SAMRO Overseas Scholarships.

He regularly performs concertos with all the leading South African symphony orchestras, including the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa. He also regularly gives solo and chamber music recitals throughout South Africa. His recent nationwide concert tour as pianist of the Moritzburg Festival Trio received rave reviews.

Ben Schoeman’s performing career extends to the international realm and includes recitals across Europe, Canada and the United Kingdom. Forthcoming engagements include a concert tour throughout South Africa (sponsored by Vodacom) as well as performances in Milan, Turin and London’s Wigmore Hall.

After his graduation from the University of Pretoria in 2005, where he studied under the guidance of Joseph Stanford, he continued his studies with Boris Petrushansky at Italy’s renowned international piano institute in Imola, the Accademia Pianistica ‘Incontri col Maestro’. Other teachers include Michel Dalberto and Louis Lortie. In 2008 he received the prestigious Laureate Award from the University of Pretoria for his outstanding achievements as well as his contribution to art music in South Africa. He is currently enrolled for a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at City University of London and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where his teacher is Ronan O’Hora.
