The British play Noises Off is bound to have you in stitches. Written by Michael Frayn, Noises Off can be considered a farce within a comedy and gives an inside look at all the antics of the theatre: the ups, downs, backstabbing, and relationships that form while a play is being produced and performed.

Noises Off follow a group of actors preparing for a cringe-worthy production called “Nothing-On.” What follows is on-stage misdirection, misunderstandings, doors that will not work, and props that aren’t there. Theatregoers are promised a glimpse of what happens backstage as the stage will literally turn. The actor’s best and worst sides are displayed, revealing their mysteries of trying to keep track of their newspapers, plants, lovers, missing cast members and a few plates of Sardines.

Noises Off will be featuring third-year students of the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts of the University of the Free State. Directed by Thys Heydenrych. It will be performed from 26 to 29 September 2018 at the Wynand Mouton Theatre, UFS campus, at 19:30. Tickets are available at Computicket.

This production is appreciated by an audience of age 15 and over because of a more … grown-up storyline.

The production is made possible with the support from Creative Kilowatt and Iewers Nice.

FSSO Symphony concert - Soloist: Albie van Schalkwyk (Piano)

FSSO Symphony concert
Odeion
Thursday 16 September 2010
19:30

Soloist: Albie van Schalkwyk (Piano)
Conductor: Conrad van Alphen

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann’s birth, the FSSO will perform two works by the composer: the popular Piano Concerto in A minor and the Symphony No. 1 (“Spring”) at the launch concert of the 11th Odeion Musik Fest. This year’s fest is dedicated to the music of Handel and Schumann.

Internationally acclaimed conductor Conrad van Alphen will be on the podium. As artistic director and chief conductor of Sinfonia Rotterdam he has moulded this orchestra to one of the best orchestras in The Netherlands who host their own concert series in Rotterdam.  Conrad van Alphen is a popular guest conductor of various orchestras nationally and internationally.  He regularly conducts orchestras in The Netherlands, England, Germany, Bulgaria, Russia, Slovenia, Poland, South Africa, China and Mexico.

The soloist in die piano concerto will be Albie van Schalkwyk who will return to the Odeion stage for the first time since he moved from Bloemfontein to Cape Town at the beginning of last year. Van Schalkwyk, who was on the staff of the Department of Music of the UF for 12 years, is now professor of piano at the College of Music in Cape Town.

The programme will open with movements from the Second Suite from Handel’s Water Muisc.
