(Odeion / Kopanong)

The ODEION SCHOOL OF MUSIC aspires to excellence and aims to provide superior tuition at an international standard. The South African higher music education arena remains isolated in many senses, and this impression is reinforced by a declining number of students studying music. The OSM aims to fill these voids by pro-actively generating and facilitating excellence on several levels simultaneously. A multilateral policy towards internationalisation and innovation constitutes the cornerstone of our strategy.

The Liesbeth Schlumberger-Kurpershoek Organ Chair was founded in 2015 by the OSM and is positioned under the auspices of the OSM International Artistic Mentorship Programme (IAMP). The main objective of the IAMP being establishing partnerships with musicians (soloists, chamber musicians, and pedagogues) who are pursuing and already have established careers as musicians internationally. On par with international tendencies, the aim is to deploy these experts as instructors to coach and mentor OSM students complimentary to the local residential OSM performance faculty.

The amount of students studying the organ has declined drastically in South African during the last two decades. Therefore, it is imperative for the OSM that the anticipated initiatives and intellectual capital generated by the organ chair will be optimally accessible to all South African students, lecturers, liturgical and amateur organists.

The Liesbeth Schlumberger Organ Chair is assembled of an annual week-long intensive tuition programme to mentor and tutor SA organ students and organists under the tutelage of Liesbeth Schlumberger. Complimentary Liesbeth presents two concert recitals contrasting in nature during this timeslot as well as a lecture.

Apart from the scheduled annual programme to be hosted by the OSM in South Africa, our long-term aim is that talented OSM organ students will have the opportunity to study a semester or more of their studies under the auspices of Liesbeth Schlumberger and her colleagues in France at Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon (Lyon CNSMD). Formal discussions with the aim of forging of a bi-lateral agreement between the Lyon CNSMD and the Odeion School of Music is planned for this year.

The OSM has presented already two already two highly successful events of the Liesbeth Schlumberger Organ Leaning Chair in 2015 and 2016. For both events students and organist from all over the country participated as master students at the event. The third Liesbeth Schlumberger Organ Leaning Chair is scheduled to take place from 28 September – 5 October 2018.”

Trio NeuKlang

TRIO NEUKLANG

with

Nikolaj Abramson – clarinet,
Jan Jachmann – classical accordion
& Arthur Hornig – cello

14 September 2017

Odeion

19:30

The three gentlemen listed above are unfortunately not the most skilled of writers. Aware of their shortcomings, they decided to let a charming as well as eloquent journalist describe their trio. The text that resulted, was adorned with phrases such as:

“The extravagant original arrangements combine musical genres and eras that were previously stylistically separate, letting old familiar sounds sound new.”
Eloquent Journalist

“The unique instrumentation creates a versatile sound that alternates between the precision of chamber music and the breadth of a symphony orchestra.”
Eloquent Journalist

Not that this isn’t true, but these compliments made the three musicians blush to such an extent that they decided they would rather write the text themselves. However, they realized that their world of music – in which Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik sounds like a tango, Beethoven’s symphonies become jazz standards and contemporary music appears well-tempered – is better described with their music than with words.

By founding this new trio the three musicians have set themselves the objective of bringing a different musical experience to the concert hall, linking familiar music with new sounds and bringing with it a renewed sense of excitement. To achieve this objective, they work with well-known contemporary composers and arrange their compositions themselves.

As a reward for its musical work, the Trio has been recognised with numerous awards. Included in the awards are the Artist Grant from the city of Berlin, the Brandenburg Chamber Music Award from Banzendorf and the Ensemble Prize of the city of Moers. Two most recent concert programs were "Lost in tango" and "Goodbye Astor" in the Tango tradition.

The trio also performs works of the classical composers. For this part of their repertoire, they received excellent press reviews and enthusiastic praise from their audiences. The trio has successfully performed at numerous festivals, including the International Ludwigsburg Castle Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

PROGRAMME (works from their new album “Goodbye Astor”):

The new album from Trio NeuKlang sounds as if the great composers of classical music met Astor Piazzolla in the old Berlin Funkhaus broadcasting center to record an album together. In reality, this musical encounter was arranged by Trio NeuKlang – the CD features famous works from European classical music played in a unique style influenced by tango and jazz. With their arrangements, the trio demonstrates that Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” was, in reality, inspired by Astor Piazzolla, that Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” cut Ludwig van Beethoven’s hair on the side and that jazz concerts took place in Edvard Grieg’s “Hall of the Mountain King”. “Goodbye Astor” is both a declaration of love to tango as well as a tribute to classical music.
