OSM Opening Concert 2018

The Odeion School of Music is presenting the annual OSM Opening Concert on Saturday 17 March 2018 at 19:30. The programme for this concert will consist of a curated programme of solo recitals, chamber music as well as ensembles recited by gifted OSM students.

The Free State Youth Wind Ensemble under the baton of George Foster will recite Ammerland by the Dutch composer Jacob den Haan (born 1959) as well as Majestia by James Swearingen (Born 1947) - an American born composer. George Foster and colleague, Danré Strydom, founded the ensemble three years ago as a collaboration initiative between the OSM and the Free State Symphony Orchestra (FSSO).

Six cellists Chris van Zyl, Ashlin Grobbelaar, Marcus Motaung, Matthys Coetzee and John Minnaar will join forces with Prof Anmari van der Westhuizen by performing the riveting Requiem for Six Cellos and Piano, Op. 66 by D. Popper.

Lecturers George Foster (tuba), Xavier Cloete (bassoon) and Lesley-Ann Mathews (piano) will première the Sonatina for Bassoon, Piano and Tuba by Noel Stockton (born 1930).

The OSM CAMERATA will end the concert with their rendition of Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances for orchestra, Sz.56, under the baton of Xavier Cloete. The OSM CAMERATA is the laureate of the first International Ictus Music Competition (University and Conservatory Orchestras) presented for the first time in 2017.

During this Opening Concert, the OSM will bestow the ORDER OF THE OSM on string pedagogues Francois and Tilla Henkins, as a small gesture of our gratitude and respect for their lifelong dedication to the education and mentoring of several excellent South African violinists and cellists.
