The Postgraduate School opened their training programme for 2012 with a lunch-hour presentation by Prof Annette Wilkinson. The presentation targeted emerging scholars interested in developing their research supervision skills.

The meeting was attended by 136 lecturers and postgraduate students. The presentation focused on assisting students with the delineation of their research topic.

Prof Wilkinson encouraged supervisors to make use of interactive, structured methods to guide students in their research. One of the problems that she identified was that many candidates fail to develop in-depth knowledge of the literature in their research field.

Many students do not know how to locate the relevant sources and once they find literature on the relevant topic, do not know what to do with it. She provided practical hints on how supervisors can assist postgraduate students to overcome these problems.
