Admission requirements
Unless stated otherwise, the institutional rules of the university and the faculty that apply to Advanced Diplomas apply to ADSARD.

Students with a related diploma or qualification, both at NQF level 6, meet the minimum entry requirements for this ADSARD.

Applicants with different qualifications can be admitted if they are judged as equivalent through recognition of prior learning process (RPL) by the designated UFS panel.

Applicants should have sound and proven experience relevant to the agricultural environment. This qualification is not envisaged for the individual passing on directly from the National Senior Certificate to subsequent NQF levels.

Practical experience (to be defined by the EXCO of the centre) in agriculture and/or rural development and appropriate prior learning are prerequisites for admission.

All applications will be screened by a panel comprising the director of the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture, Rural Development and Extension (CENSARD) and the heads of the five ADSARD modules.

This programme will only for offered within a group context, i.e. in block sessions.

Programme

Admission Requirements

Animal Science

Admission is subject to a selection process. A minimum average of 60% in all third- and fourth-year modules of the specific Hons disciplines is required.

Actuarial Science

A candidate must have a BSc or BCom degree in Actuarial Science, and must have qualified for at least four exemptions from the subjects of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASA)

Agricultural Economics/ Management

Admission to BScAgricHons in Agricultural Economics is subject to selection. A minimum average of 60% in Agricultural Economics modules (LEK314, LEK324, LEK414, LEK424 and LEK434) is required. Additional modules may be prescribed at the discretion of the head of the department.
Admission to BAgricHons in Agricultural Management is subject to selection. A minimum average of 60% in Agricultural Management modules (LBB344 and LBB362) is required. Additional modules may be prescribed at the discretion of the head of the department.

Agrometeorology

Agrometeorology at third-year level.

Agronomy

Agronomy at third-year level.


Biochemistry

At least 64 credits in Biochemistry at third-year level. A minimum average of 65% in undergraduate Biochemistry modules. Admission is subject to a selection process.

Behavioural Genetics

Admission to BScHons in Behavioural Genetics is subject to selection. A minimum of 60% in Genetics at third-year level.

Botany

A minimum of 60% in Botany at third-year level, in consultation with the departmental chairperson.

Chemistry

To be considered for BScHons in Chemistry, a student must have a BSc degree. A minimum average of 60% in CEM314, CEM334, CEM324 and CEM344.

Computer Information Systems

A minimum average of 60% for the four third-year computer science modules: RIS314, RIS334, RIS324 and RIS344, or equivalents thereof, is required. In exceptional cases admission may be allowed in consultation with the programme director or depart­mental chairperson.

Disaster Management

A minimum of a three-year degree at NQF level 7 from any field of study with a minimum average of 60% obtained in the final year of study. The student must prove to the departmental head that he/she has adequate knowledge to justify admission to this study. Students who do not have the minimum requirements must apply through RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning).

Entomology

Entomology at third-year level. Applications evaluated in consultation with departmental chairperson.

Food Science

Food Science at third-year level. A minimum average of 65% in undergraduate Food Science modules. Admission is subject to a selection process.

Forensic Sciences

Admission to BScHons in Forensic Sciences is subject to selection. A minimum of 60% in Forensic Sciences, Chemistry, Entomology or Genetics at third-year level or equivalent modules.

Genetics

Admission to BScHons in Genetics is subject to selection. A minimum of 60% in genetics at third-year level or equivalent modules.

Geology

For admission to the honours degree in Geology, a student must achieve a combined average pass mark of 60% in four Geology modules (64 credits) at third-year level (two modules in the first semester and two in the second semester, including GLG314 and GLG324).

Geography and Geographic Information Systems

Geography at third-year level or equivalent Geography III at another university with at least 64 credits. An average of 60% in the third year.

Geohydrology

A degree in engineering or a BSc or a BScAgric degree.
An average of 60% in the final-year major subjects plus Geology I, Chemistry I, and Mathematics I or Statistics I.

Grassland Science

Admission is subject to a selection process. A minimum average of 60% in all third- and fourth-year modules of the specific honours disciplines is required.

Home Economics

BSc (Home Economics), B (Consumer Science) or an equivalent qualifi­cation.

Irrigation Sciences / Management

A relevant BSc degree in Irrigation Sciences / A relevant B degree in Irrigation Management. Admission is subject to approval by die departmental chairperson.

Limnology

A BSc or BScAgric degree with at least one of the following as major: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Zoology, Entomology, Physics, Soil Science, Microbiology, Botany, Mathematics. For further enquiries, call: 051 401 2863.


Mathematics and Applied Mathematics

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at third-year level or equivalent modules.

Mathematical Statistics

A minimum average of 60% in WKS314, WKS324, WKS334 and WKS344. Admission is subject to approval by the departmental chairperson.

Microbial Biotechnology

At least 64 credits in Biochemistry or Microbiology at third-year level, or in consultation with the departmental chairperson. An average of 65% in undergraduate Microbiology or Biochemistry modules. Admission is subject to a selection process.

Microbiology

At least 64 credits in Microbiology at third-year level. An average of 65% in undergraduate Microbiology modules. These include VWS344 and BOC314. Admission is subject to a selection process.

Physics

An average of 60% in FSK314, FSK332, FSK352,FSK324, FSK342 and FSK362.

Plant Breeding

A minimum average of 60% in Plant Breeding at final-year level, in consultation with the departmental chairperson.

Plant Health

Plant Health or equivalent modules at third-year level.

Plant Pathology

An average of 60% in Plant Pathology at final-year level, in consultation with the departmental chairperson.

Polymer Science

A minimum average of 60% for all the Chemistry modules at third-year level is required

Soil Science

Soil Science at third-year level.

Statistics

WTW114 and WTW124 as well as a minimum average pass mark of 65% in STK216 + STK226, and STK316 + STK326. Admission is subject to the approval by the departmental chairperson.

Wildlife Sciences / Management

Grassland Science at third-year level or equivalent modules in consultation with the departmental chairperson / A relevant B degree in Wildlife Management. Admission is subject to approval by the departmental chairperson.

Zoology

Zoology at third-year level. Applications are evaluated in consultation with departmental chairperson.

Admission requirements for Honours degrees in Architecture:

Closing date for applications is 31 May.

To qualify for the selection process, a candidate must have obtained a BArchStud degree or equivalent qualification from any other Architectural Learning Site, with an average final-year mark of 55% for the following modules or equivalent thereof: BOW306, OGT304 and TAR304, as well as a minimum of 60% for ONW300 or the equivalent thereof.

Candidates that do not comply with the above prerequisite must either repeat selected module(s) (once only) or work in an architect’s office for a year in order to be eligible to apply for the BArchStudHons degree the following year.

Candidates must (at the discretion of the department) attend a personal interview, present a portfolio and provide verified academic records. The final discretion whether the student is regarded as being ready for the programme will rest with the selection panel.
