Our year groups are relatively small

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics incorporates various activities into the four years of study. The year always starts off with a welcoming of the first-year students.  The first- to third-year students participate in theory and practical sessions while the fourth-years start with their residencies in different areas where they work under the supervision of qualified dietitians. Since our year groups are relatively small, our students receive individual attention. Students at our department are not ‘just a number’; they become part of the family. We also make sure our students take some time to focus on fun, as the fourth-year students organise an informal and formal function each year.

Some Teaching and Learning highlights from 2013 - 2017 include the following:

  • Riëtte van Rooyen was invited to participate in the G20 Youth Summit in Germany in 2014, in her third year of study. The G20 Youth Summit is an international non-governmental project that annually selects between 150-200 students and young experts worldwide who are eligible to become young heads of state or ministers in the national youth delegations.
  • Every year for the past three years, one of our fourth-year students won the Dean’s Medal (2015: Hester Odendaal; 2016: Desiré Brand; 2017: Shana Beeton) which is awarded to the final-year student who achieved the best results in respect of a first four-year BSc degree in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
  • In 2015, Hester Odendaal was also awarded the Senate Medal for the best student in a four-year degree within the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2014.
  • Prof Louise van den Berg was awarded the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award at the 2015 Excellence in Teaching and Learning Awards. Dr Lucia Meko was awarded the same award in 2018, serving as a testimony to the quality of teaching and learning within the department.
