The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics incorporates various activities into the four years of study. The year always starts off with a welcoming of the first-year students. The first to third year students participate in theory and practical sessions while the fourth years start with their residencies in different areas where they work under the supervision of qualified dietitians.
Small groups
Since our year groups are relatively small, our students receive individual attention. Students at our department are not ‘just a number’; they become part of the family. We also make sure our students take some time to focus on fun, as the fourth-year students organise an informal and formal function each year.
Student awards
Students from the department have represented the department, UFS and the country on different levels. A number of students from the department have been awarded the Dean’s Medal (awarded to the final-year student who achieved the best results in respect of a first four-year BSc degree in the Faculty of Health Sciences) or Senate Medal (awarded to the best student in a four-year degree within the Faculty of Health Sciences) over the past years.
Staff recognitions
Staff members have also been recognised for their efforts and achievements in terms of teaching and learning. Prof Louise van den Berg (2015) as well as Dr Lucia Meko (2018) have been awarded the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award at the annual Excellence in Teaching and Learning Awards, serving as a testimony to the quality of teaching and learning within the department.
