MARIUS LUCIEN COETZEE (ABRIGED CV)

Marius Lucien Coetzee was born in South Africa on 30 May 1969. He matriculated from the Pretoria High School for Art, Ballet, Music, and Drama. He continued his studies at the University of Pretoria in Political Sciences and Music, specialising in Art Singing Performance.

 

Since 2011 Coetzee has been employed as Innovation & Development Manager at the Odeion School of Music (OSM) at the University of the Free State.  At the OSM, he is also the Artistic Director of the celebrated OSM CAMERATA and the curator/founder of the Liesbeth Schlumberger Organ Chair. In 2018 Coetzee received the UFS INNOVATION AWARD (Teaching & Learning).

 

From 2003- 2008 Coetzee was employed by the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (School of Cultural Studies) in Finland, where he was mainly involved in the founding of the Degree Programme in International Degree in Music Management as a joint collaboration between the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (FIN), Buckinghamshire University College (UK) & IN Holland University (NL). From 2004-2006 Coetzee was appointed head of the Finnish leg programme.

 

In 2005 Coetzee secured funding from Brussels (EU SOCRATES ERASMUS grant joint curriculum development) for the EUROPEAN DEGREE IN INTERNATIONAL MUSIC MANGEMENT project and added a Norwegian partner to the consortium. Coetzee served as the project leader until the end of 2008 .[https://youtu.be/lUtlz_gkJKo].

 

In addition, Coetzee collaborated in founding the EUROPEAN MASTER OF MUSIC: NEW AUDIENCES & INNOVATIVE PRACTICE as part of the quality assurance team and represented the School of Cultural Studies for the School of Music of the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences.

 

From 1999- 2002 Coetzee served as the permanent Cultural Adviser for Finland South Africa`s Embassy (Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs). He founded and managed the Cultural Section of the Finnish Embassy in South Africa.

 

Coetzee started his professional career in 1994 as the then State Theatre Dance Company (PACT) marketing manager in South Africa. Coetzee was instrumental in procuring top-notch internationally recognised choreographers in the State Theatre Dance Company`s repertoire.

 

In December 1994, the State Theatre Dance Company sent him on an extensive study visit to Belgium and the Netherlands to observe the management & marketing sections of acclaimed dance troupes in Brussels, Amsterdam, and The Hague.

In 1993 he was the recipient of a SAMRO (the Southern African Music Rights Organisation) grant for studies in Arts Management. He spent this period in Helsinki, Finland. During this year, he became interested in Finnish arts/culture policy and the dynamics of contemporary Finnish aesthetics.

In 1997 he received a grant for an extensive internship in Israel, where he was resident at the acclaimed Bat Sheva Dance Company`s marketing section.

 

In 2022 Coetzee received the first prize of the National Ingrid Jonker: L’ART PO?TIQUE poetry competition and is planning to release his debut poetry anthology.
