As part of its vision, the University of the Free State (UFS) aspires to be an internationally engaged university that produces globally competitive graduates and knowledge. A key role player in the vision is the Office for International Affairs (OIA). One of the projects in which they are playing a critical leadership role is the iKudu Project – co-funded through Erasmus+ – to bring about a South African concept of Internationalisation of the Curriculum (IoC), which integrates Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) virtual exchanges. Having marked its 25th anniversary in 2023, the International Education Association of South Africa’s (IEASA) annual conference took place from 22 to 25 August 2023 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, attended by colleagues from the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Office for International Affairs(OIA). Read more

 Internationalisation of the curriculum has been mandatory for institutions of higher education since 2020, according to the National Policy Framework for the Internationalisation of Higher Education in South Africa. Read more

The Embassy of the Netherlands recently visited the University of the Free State (UFS) with a view to reinforcing the existing relations between South Africa and the Netherlands, specifically focusing on virtual collaborations and opportunities with the UFS. Read more

Can we energise existing collaborations in education and research between Dutch and South African educational institutions, start new collaborations and strengthen relations between the two countries? This was the core of the knowledge mission that outgoing Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf undertook with representatives of 21 knowledge institutes between 15 and 18 October. Elisabeth Minnemann, Chairman of the Executive Board of The Hague University of Applied Sciences, also went along, as one of the representatives and figurehead on behalf of higher professional education.
