Consumer Science at Kovsies
Consumer science is a diverse discipline concerned with basic human needs. It explores consumers or individuals in relation to food, clothing, textiles, housing, nutrition and food security. Students in this dynamic curriculum become part of a growing research community built on the understanding of consumer behaviour and the motivations behind individual and family decision-making regarding these basic needs.
In the diverse environment of South Africa’s culturally rich population, understanding consumers have become of utmost importance. The composition of South Africa’s consumers have changed greatly and globalisation has caused the needs of the consumer to continually evolve, increasing the role of the consumer scientist in addressing these needs. Consumer scientists can use their knowledge and skills to assist consumers to improve their life skills as well as their socio-economic situation.
