Consumer science is a diverse discipline concerned with basic human needs. It explores consumers or individuals in relation to food, clothing, textiles, housing and nutrition. Students in this dynamic curriculum become part of a growing research community built on the understanding of consumer behaviour and the motivations behind individual and family decision-making regarding these basic needs.

Consumer science can be interpreted as the study of individuals to acquire more information about their needs and behaviour. Here at Kovsies, we try to provide the background and tools for a strong and comprehensive understanding of the consumer behaviour principles.

In the diverse environment of South Africa’s culturally rich population, understanding consumers have become of utmost importance. The composition of South Africa’s consumers have changed greatly over the past decade or two. Globalisation has caused the needs of the consumer to continually evolve, therefore the role of the consumer scientist in addressing these needs have gained importance. Consumer scientists can use their knowledge and skills to assist consumers to improve their life skills as well as their socio-economic situation.

Studying Consumer Science at Kovsies prepares young people for living in today’s world, as well as tomorrow’s!
