Consumer Sciences Header

Consumer science is a diverse discipline addressing various aspects of basic human needs. It explores an individual’s behaviour in relation to food, clothing, textiles, housing, nutrition and food security.

Students in this dynamic curriculum become part of a growing research community, built on the understanding of consumer behaviour and the motivation behind individual and family decision-making regarding their basic needs.

In the diverse environment of South Africa’s cultural rich population and the inherent changed consumer market, understanding consumers and their behaviours are of utmost importance.

Together with the impact of globalisation, the needs and desires of consumers are continuously evolving. This places additional emphasis on the unique role of the consumer scientist to develop in addressing these changing consumer needs.
