Community Development Header

The University of the Free State (UFS) prides itself on being actively involved in communities. In the same manner, the Department of Sustainable Food Systems and Development makes it a priority to be actively engaged in community development. It is also considered a valuable resource in the transformation process.

This involvement is seen as an educational platform of preparing and supporting students to play a leading role in every environment of employment. The UFS considers three categories to be essential when applying involvement in our communities.

Academically engaged citizenship refers to all the professional work, skills, time, and involvement of academics in for the benefit of communities outside of the university.

Student engaged citizenship refers to all the work and involvement in community development done through professional and voluntary student organisations, residence programmes, as well as student affairs management programmes.

University engaged citizenship refers to the university as a corporate citizen and its contribution to the development of communities.
