Prospective MSc and PhD students should follow the following steps prior to applying for admission:
- Students holding foreign qualifications should contact the South African Qualifications Authority to determine whether their degrees will allow entry into an MSc / PhD programme. Additional requirements (e.g. language proficiency requirements) may be set by the Department for foreign applicants.
- Students should ensure that they have sufficient funding (for both living expenses and for project running costs). Students are welcome to contact the Department to enquire about the availability of funding but in most cases students would have to secure funding from research agencies (e.g. the National Research Foundation), their employers or from industry partners.
- Although "off-the-shelf" projects are occasionally available, students typically have to approach the department with a provisional research topic after which the department will attempt to find a suitable supervisor. Please visit the staff page to search for potential supervisors working on topics akin to that which you would like to research. Supervisors may request the submission of a short research proposal prior to application for admission.
- Students should ideally have their own transport.
- Once a supervisor has been identified and agreed upon by the Head of Department, students may proceed with their application for admission. Once a student number has been assigned, students may proceed with their registration.
