The Department of Geology is located in its own three-story building on the Bloemfontein Campus of the UFS. Facilities include a library, a drafting office / GIS laboratory, a museum, three lecture theatres, various laboratories and store rooms, as well as offices for staff and postgraduate students. One of the passageways in the building has been converted to an underground mining simulator, where students undergo training in the art and science of tunnel mapping.

The department is also the proud owner of a 470 m2 core storage facility that is used for the curation of drill core material used in teaching and research, that was erected during 2013 with generous sponsorship from the Minerals Education Trust Fund and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd.
