Description | "By inventing dialogues, students synthesize their knowledge of issues, personalities, and historical periods into the form of a carefully structured, illustrative conversation. There are two levels of “invention” possible with this technique. On the first level, students can create Invented Dialogues by carefully selecting and weaving together actual quotes from primary sources. On a second, more challenging, level, they may invent reasonable quotes that fit the character of the speakers and the context."

Purpose | Invented Dialogues provide rich information on students’ ability to capture the essence of other people’s personalities and styles of expression – as well as on their understanding of theories, controversies, and the opinions of others. This technique provides a challenging way to assess – and to develop – students’ skills at creatively synthesizing, adapting, and even extrapolating beyond the material they have studied." — Classroom Assessment Techniques, Angelo, TA and Cross, KP, 1993 |
