About BUSSE

What is BUSSE?

The Beginning University Survey of Student Engagement (BUSSE) measures entering first-year students’ pre-university academic and co-curricular experiences and their expectations regarding participation in educationally purposeful activities during their first year at a tertiary institution.  This data enables an institution to gain a better understanding of the experiences of high-risk students. BUSSE is administered as soon as students arrive on campus and the data is available relatively soon afterwards.

Why should institutions participate?

The data from the BUSSE can be used in combination with SASSE data (SASSE is administered during the third term). Biographical data collected by BUSSE allows institutions to gather information not usually collected during admission and registration, such as the type of high schools students attended, their medium of instruction and whether students are first-generation students. BUSSE data makes it possible for institutions to align their efforts with student expectations, to assess the effectiveness of those efforts with regard to students’ engagement inside and outside the classroom, to conduct data-driven analyses, and to guide an institution in enhancing goal-directed change management.
